UCC SME Cloud Incubator Group

In September 2011 Professor John Morrison,  BCRI and Centre for Unified Computing established a Cloud Incubator to help SME’s to overcome the start-up difficulties associated with Cloud Computing. These difficulties include access to appropriate and independent expertise and advice, and access to affordable enterprise-level Cloud software during the initial learning phase.   We are offering our expertise and resources free to the SME sector for a limited incubation period after which it is expected that these companies would be in a position to engage profitably with professional Cloud providers. Our prime motivation is to stimulate and support economic growth in Ireland. The activities of the incubator include:

    ·         Regular group seminars, problem solving and solution sharing sessions.

o   Exploring not only technical but also legal and business issues. These sessions will result in a database of common problems, concerns and solutions which will be used to help subsequent participants in the program.

o   Technical training in specific technologies offered.

    ·         Access to the UCC/Collaborator Cloud incubator for exploratory purposes

o   It is not intended that the SME would use these facilities to conduct business; rather they would be used to develop Cloud based business practices which could subsequently be supported by professional Cloud providers.

The BCRI has offered compute clusters and storage to research groups based in UCC since 2003. While storage has been offered through a cloud for a couple of years, the compute services were offered through a traditional cluster model. In late 2011 the BCRI started a project to transition its compute clusters to a cloud system.
